Special Services Unit cop shot dead

The John family of Dickson, Georgetown, was thrown into a state of shock on Saturday morning when they received the tragic news of the death of their loved one, Special Services Unit (SSU) officer, Kingsley John.{{more}}

Reports are that John, fondly known as “King John”, was involved, along with other members of his unit, in a drug raid at Biabou on that fateful morning. One man was arrested, and drugs and guns were seized.

A police official, speaking to SEARCHLIGHT on condition of anonymity, said the firearm was being cleared when it went off accidentally. This is said to have happened at the Biabou Police Station, while the man who was under arrest was being processed.

“I think he was in the process of clearing the weapon and not playing with the weapon,” said the officer, who refuted claims that John and another police officer were playing with firearms when John was shot in the stomach.

He subsequently died.

When SEARCHLIGHT visited John’s relatives at Dickson last Sunday morning, they were not in a position to speak to the media, since they did not have much information about the incident.

The name of the other police officer involved in the indicent has not been released. (HN)
