Wooden house slips from foundation

CLIFF HANGER

Errol Caine peeped out of the window of his two bedroom wooden house just in time to see it slipping from its foundation.{{more}}

Fearing the worst, he got out just seconds before the two-room abode tipped over on its side on the morning of Monday, September 1st.

Now the 61-year-old Fairbaine Pasture resident is in a precarious position.

Caine, also known by residents in the village as “Warbean”, has lived in the house for the past 12 years, although he had spent all of his life in the area.

The unemployed man, who seemed to be not too pleased with all the attention he has been receiving, shied away from answering many of Searchlight’s questions; except with a nod of his head, or a wave of his cutlass.

When Searchlight arrived at his home on Tuesday, Caine was going about business as usual, cooking lunch on an outside fire.

He said that he believes that the posts that the house was standing on gave way under the weight of the house.

After the house slipped from its position the day before, police and other residents appealed to him to evacuate the building, but the bachelor indicated that he was quite okay where he was and was not prepared to move since he had nowhere to go.

He indicated that he was going to stay there until he got some assistance, but believes that the house cannot be moved; instead it would have to be demolished.

According to Caine, nothing in the house was damaged, and sleeping in the house angled at 45 degrees was “not too bad”.
