Simmons made the appeal for unity to the nationâs political leaders on Sunday, August 17, 2008, at the launch of the South East Steel Orchestra, which took place at the Stubbs Playing Field.
âRemember, united we stand, divided we fall,â Simmons stated.
Much of his address focused on community leadership, sustainable development and training for the youths of Stubbs and its environs.
However, he used the opportunity to address a bone of contention in the community – the lack of use of the Stubbs Playing Field.
âWe must open the playing fields of this country. We want to ensure that we have access to this facility. If we donât getit we will do things to ensure we have access to it,â Simmons warned. He said the Stubbs playing field and other playing fields across the nation can play a major role in helping the youths to stay focused, as their main desire would be to get some rest after a long game on the field of play.
Simmons also used the opportunity to highlight the 30th anniversary of the JEMS organization.
âWith all of your commitment, we will function for another thirty years,â said Simmons.
Meanwhile, the South East Steel Orchestra came in for high commendation for its delivery of several lovely renditions which delighted the audience. The pan group played publicly just three months after beginning to learn the pan.
The new group headed by Albert Harry, received sponsorship from the Social Investment Fund (SIF) to the tune of EC$100,000 for equipment, renovation and the staging of the event.
âThe pans are expensive, so take care of them,â said Bentley Browne, CEO of the SIF.
Harry promised that the South East Development Inc, the driving force behind the South East Steel Orchestra will continue to make great strides for the development of the young people.
âWhen I am running things, it never fails,â said Harry, adding âafter three months of drill and practice we are finally able to launch todayâ.
The ceremony which was also supported by the Pan Against Crime Committee was attended by Area Representative for South Windward, Glen Beache, acting Permanent Secretary Rosita Snagg, Pastor Edward Smith and Commissioner of Police, Keith Miller.
