Sharpes man dies in accident

Dennis Williams wished his 13-year-old nephew a happy birthday, and many more to come last Saturday, then later that night, his own life came to an end.{{more}}

The 43-year-old Redemption Sharpes resident died after the rental jeep (RM 646) that he was traveling in, ran off the road and overturned along the Pembroke public road, at around 11:45 p.m.

He and two of his brothers, Cornell and Adolphus, had gone to Adolphus’ son’s birthday party at Chauncey, then to visit a friend in Barrouallie. The other two brothers escaped major injury.

Dennis, who had been employed at the St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown for the last 10 years, has been described by his 84-year-old mother as a great son.

“I not just saying so because it is the newspaper; ask anybody about him, he was real cool, real nice, a good son,” a saddened Albertina swore, as the neighbours, who were comforting her when SEARCHLIGHT arrived, nodded in agreement. Her dimmed, aged eyes lit up as she recalled for SEARCHLIGHT how her son, the fourth of twelve children, would slap her on her leg when he was leaving, saying “keep good till I come back.”

And she found even more strength, and some laugher arose amidst the quicksand of her pain, as she remembered the many times he would jokingly raise up her blouse, saying he wanted “bubby”.

It was Sunday morning when Albertina got the call, and neither she nor her husband Renald Wynne could believe that they were hearing that their son was dead.

“We thought he was in his room,” she said.

“I don’t know yet how I going to cope. The Lord is my keeper, though,” Albertina said, as she bowed her head, the reality of the tragedy biting at her emotions.

Meanwhile, one of Dennis’ sisters, Marva, told SEARCHLIGHT that the two brothers that survived the accident were having a real tough time coming to terms with what had happened.

Dennis became this country’s seventh road fatality for the year.
