‘Youth I’ on murder charge

Donny ’Youth I’ Williams, 33, was on Monday charged with the shooting death of 22-year-old Odinga ‘Oda’ Collins on June 16, 2007, while the Miss North Windward beauty pageant was taking place in Georgetown{{more}}.

Collins died on the spot from a single gunshot to the back, after a masked gunman opened fire in his direction as he stood outside the Spotlight Stadium in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He was buried last Sunday.

The accused, a carpenter by profession, was employed on the Grenadine island of Canouan, and was up on the mainland on work break.

Williams was reported to be a close friend of the deceased, and according to villagers, both young men spent most of late Friday evening together at Collins’ home.

The youngsters grew up together and as one resident explained, Williams virtually spent most of his childhood days in Collins’ yard; they ate together and slept in the same house at times.

“They were like so” the elderly lady said as she held up her right hand and crossed her index finger over the middle finger as if to make the two fingers one.

Williams was among a number of young men detained by police following Collins death; he was the only one charged.
