RALLY CALL

NDP General Secretary calls for town ‘shut down’

General Secretary of the New Democratic Party (NDP) Daniel Cummings has said that the NDP will not allow anyone to run roughshod over any segment of the country, as he reiterated a call for people to join the protest march to be held today.{{more}}

Cummings said the march dubbed “Shut Down the Town” would also be the march to remember since it would highlight

what he described as the “Poorly implemented VAT, the toll at the Grenadines wharf, and the crime and victimization Vincentians face.”

The General Secretary urged persons who were hesitant about joining the march not to be faint hearted and called on them to show their solidarity. He lamented, “The issues we would be marching against are substantive and very serious, but I know that people have every reason to be afraid because this is a wicked government and they are very vindictive. You must not be timid, but you must bravely stand up.”

Cummings said this government was sewing seeds of discontent, over stepping their power and were going outside the law. He said while local organizations such as the Teachers Union have said that this country is not in crisis, the fact that the Statutory Rules and Order SRNO to charge the $1.00 toll for persons at the Grenadines wharf was done on a Sunday was an indication not only of dictatorship but was a travesty of justice.

“This is the height of desperation from the ULP government and it shows that they are ruling by trial and error and making a mockery of the system. This is what “Coming back to Papa” means when they make the $1.00 toll at the Grenadines wharf retroactive,” he lashed out.

The NDP General Secretary said that the last protest, which was held on February 28, focused on highlighting the corruption, crime and violence in the country and said that since then, the situation had

worsened.
