Man, girlfriend charged with attempted murder

A couple was charged with attempted murder and arson at the Serious Offences Court yesterday and granted bail.

Calvert Charles, 54 and his girlfriend Gailene Farrel, 53, were charged with, on November 1, attempting to murder Edward Durrant of Lowmans Bay, destroying by fire a board house worth $10,000 and being reckless as to whether the property was destroyed.

The charges were indictably laid against the two, with the Preliminary Inquiry set to begin on February 6, 2018 at the Serious Offences Court.

With no objection to bail, Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias granted bail of $30,000 with one surety.

The accused were to surrender all travel documents and stop notices were placed at all ports against them. They are to report every week to the Questelles Police Station between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Mondays.

Despite the fact that they were granted bail, Gailene Farrel stepped off the witness box grinding her teeth and with apparent dissatisfaction.(KR)
