$1,500 fine for one pound of weed

An Arnos Vale man was fined EC$1,500 yesterday after being found with a pound of cannabis.

When he appeared before the Serious Offences Court, Aleyson Cupid pleaded guilty to having 715 grams of cannabis with intent to supply on March 2, 2017.

Cupid was arrested last Thursday when a squad of police officers headed by station sergeant Bailey went to his home in relation to an unlicensed firearm.

Cupid was met at home where PC Delpesche during a search of the premises found a pink Jansport bag containing a partially wrapped plastic bag and four transparent taped packages of cannabis.

Delpesche pointed out the offence to Cupid and cautioned him, to which he replied, “Officer ah my weed wey me just get from a partner, but if yo ah look for gun, wrong house yo ah search.”

Yesterday, Cupid asked the court to be lenient adding that he works with a trafficker in Barbados and makes “good money” so if fined, he would be able to pay it.

He claimed that he does not dabble in the illegal activity and only came across the cannabis because he exchanged it for a tarpaulin.

Cupid was fined $1,500 to be paid by March 30, 2017, in default he will be imprisoned for eight months.(AS)
