Fairbaine Pasture man gets eight years in jail for manslaughter
Fairbaine Pasture resident Cardon Sergeant was on Tuesday, March 24 sentenced to eight years in jail for manslaughter.{{more}}
The 58-year-old was convicted by a 12-member jury, at the High Courtâs Criminal Assizes, following a two-week trial.
Before deliberation, the jury was given the option of returning a verdict of guilty of murder or guilty of manslaughter.
They found him guilty of the latter.
On May 19, 2012, Sergeant was playing a game of dominoes when an argument broke out between him and Elvis Hoyte, 52. Segreant is said to have struck the deceased on the head with a rock.
Initially, Sergeant was charged with wounding; that charge was later upgraded to attempted murder. However, Hoyte succumbed to his injuries about two months later at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital and the murder charge was brought against Sergeant.
Counsel Linton Lewis and Israel Bruce represented Sergeant.
Director of Public Prosecutions Colin Williams and Crown Counsel Karim Nelson appeared for the state.(KW)
