Mary Pompey appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to possession of 20 grammes of cocaine.

Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias ordered Pompey to pay $1,000 forthwith or spend six months in jail.

She was further ordered to pay the remainder by August 22 or spend four months in jail.

The court heard that on August 2, at about 11:20 a.m., members of the Narcotics Unit went to Pompey’s shop to execute a warrant in respect of drugs.

During the search, a transparent plastic bag containing 34 foil wrappings of cocaine was found in the bottom of a stove in the shop.

Also, during that search, $120 was found, which police believed to be proceeds of the sale of the cocaine.

That money was confiscated by the court.

Pompey, who has several previous convictions for drug possession, pleaded with the magistrate not to send her to jail.

“Oh God! Have mercy on me, please,” she cried out.

“You are a perpetual offender. Why do you keep doing this?” Magistrate Browne-Matthias asked.

Pompey did not provide an answer.(KW)
