Chief Magistrate position still vacant

Three months have elapsed since the resignation of former Chief Magistrate Sonya Young, and to date, the post has not been filled.{{more}}

SEARCHLIGHT understands that several local lawyers, some involved in private practice, have been approached to take up the position, but they have all declined.

For the past two weeks or so, magistrate Zoila Ellis-Browne has been presiding over matters at the Serious Offences Court.

It is not clear if she will assume the position of chief magistrate.

Ellis-Browne began sitting at the Serious Offences Court shortly after the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court went on break.

Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias presides over that court.

Young, who is now a judge in Belize, spent her last day on the job on April 4, 2014 after spending six years as chief magistrate.

The Judicial and Legal Services Commission, which is an independent commission, appoints magistrates and judges in the Eastern Caribbean. (KW)
