Seven Trinidadians jailed for 12 years

Seven nationals of Trinidad and Tobago were on Wednesday sentenced to 12 years imprisonment on drug related charges.{{more}}

The men: Kierston Mieres, David Sammy, James Gordon, Ronald Burnley, Adrian Clement, Mark Corbie and Nigel Octave were all convicted at the High Court in May, on four counts of possession of controlled drugs, drug trafficking and attempted export of a controlled drug.

On Wednesday, Justice Wesley James sentenced the men to 12 years each for drug trafficking, 10 years for possession of the drug and another 10 years for attempting to export the drug.

The sentences will run concurrently

On November 11, 2010, just off the coast of Chateaubelair, the local coastguard carried out an operation, during which 1,700 pounds of marijuana were recovered from a 30-foot pirogue.

Director of Public Prosecutions Colin Williams appeared for the crown in the matter and defence attorney, Mario Merritt appeared on the prisoners’ behalf.(KW)
