Murder accused to be tried in the High Court
Cardon Sergeantâs name will appear on the next cause list for the Criminal Assizes, following a decision by Chief Magistrate Sonya Young to have him stand trial at the High Court on a murder charge.{{more}}
On Wednesday, at the Serious Offences Court, Sergeant, 56, of Fairbaine Pasture, was committed to appear before a judge and jury at the High Court for the murder of Elvis Hoyte, 52, also of the same address.
Sergeant is alleged to have taken up a rock and struck the deceased on the head, on May 19, 2012.
Initially, Sergeant was charged with wounding; that charge was later upgraded to attempted murder.
Two months later, Hoyte succumbed to his injuries at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital. Sergeant was then charged with his murder.
Attorney Dr Linton Lewis appeared for Sergeant in the matter.
Prosecutor, Inspector Adolphus Delpesche led the prosecutionâs case.
