Calder Ridge man to serve 20-year sentence

Calder Ridge man to serve 20-year sentence

As soon as he has finished serving a five-year sentence on charges of abduction, indecent assault and assault, Annell “Bun Up” Young will start serving a 20-year sentence for attempted murder and aggravated burglary.{{more}}

Justice Wesley James on Friday sentenced the Calder Ridge resident to 20 years imprisonment after a jury found him guilty of the two charges on June 14, 2012.

On May 2, 2010, at about 3 a.m., Young entered the home of Afeisha “Squingy” Toby at Victoria Village and demanded sex from her.

When the then 17-year-old girl told him no, Young went into the kitchen, grabbed a cutlass and chopped her repeatedly about her body.

The attack resulted in Toby sustaining severe chop wounds to her head, which punctured the lining of her brain. She was also chopped at the front and back of her neck, back, shoulder and hands. One of her fingers was severed.

In court, Toby said she went on her bed and took off her shirt and stayed in her jeans and bra.

“I said my prayers and then went to my bed. After a while, somebody was at my bedside. They was dolling (rubbing) down my leg; then the body was waking me up, so I say, ‘Ma, ma, you have to wake me up when you come?’ she said.

Toby said the person said “Is me, Bun Up.” Toby testified that she asked Bun Up what he was doing there. “He say he come fo piece ah wife (sex) and I turn to him and ask if he put any wife ya…” Toby said.

Her attacker then went into the kitchen and returned with a cutlass. She made it out of the house after the attack, but fell on the pavement.

Her mother came home and met her lying in a pool of blood. Young, in his testimony, remained adamant that he was never at Toby’s home that night.

During sentencing, the judge described the crime as a “vicious attack”. “The lady was asleep. I don’t know how you got in. This was a vicious attack. Vicious!” James said.

On June 29, 2011, Justice Frederick Bruce-Lyle sentenced Young to five years in jail, after a nine-member jury convicted him of abduction, indecent assault and assault on a 13 year-old girl on March 3, 2010.

The teen testified that she left her home at about 6:45 a.m. to go to school and while walking, she saw Young sitting on the porch of a house.

She said Young came out onto the main road, stopped her and told her that he heard she has AIDS.

“I ask him if he hear is me alone have AIDS in the area.” The girl said Young held on to her hands and pulled her inside of the house. “I was fighting with him because I did not want to go into the house,” she recounted.

The girl told the court that she was carried to a bedroom and was told by Young that he wanted “some sex”. “I told him if he do me anything I going to talk,” she said.

He slapped her. The girl recalled that Young left the bedroom and came back with a knife and a piece of tissue. She said that he came on the bed and was forcing himself on her. “… I told him I wanted to get my education…”

She told the court that she was choked and when he came with the knife, she said she thought Young was going to cut her, so she raised her hand and sustained a cut on her right hand.

The girl said while wrestling with Young, he pushed his hand up her skirt and inserted his finger into her vagina. She then said he took out his penis and masturbated in front of her and used the tissue to clean himself after. He denied the charges. (KW)
