Justice Frederick Bruce-Lyle handed down the sentence on Friday, May 25, at the High Courtâs Criminal Assizes.
Laborde was jointly charged with Daron Phillips, also of the same address. Phillips was, however, sentenced to five years in jail, after pleading guilty to robbery, but not guilty to possession of an imitation firearm.
The prosecution offered no evidence on the firearm matter.
The court heard that a 16-year-old student from the Thomas Saunders Secondary School was walking in the Murray Road vicinity in June 2011, when he observed four men walking behind him. The boy stopped walking and allowed two of the men to walk past him.
The boy said the two other men went into the gap at Joyetteâs Auto Care and he went to where the Mirage Mas tent was to get a drink of water. After drinking the water, the boy said one of the men stood about twenty feet in front of him. He said another man came with a mask and a gun and demanded everything he had. The boy gave up his Jansport knapsack, along with his cellular phone.
Later that day, both defendants were nabbed in Redemption Sharpes.
Police went to the home of Phillips and discovered the boyâs bag and a search warrant was executed at Labordeâs house. During that search, the boy identified his cellular phone.
Laborde pleaded with the judge for leniency and asked him to take into consideration his guilty plea.
Bruce-Lyle responded by telling Laborde that his criminal record is such that he could not help him.
Phillips also asked the court to be easy on him.
Phillips has previous convictions for wounding, assault and marijuana possession.
âYou were treated so leniently in the past that you are taking this thing for a joke. Even though you didnât have a firearm, you were part of the plan. The only reason why I am lenient on you is that you pleaded guilty,â Bruce-Lyle said.(KW)
