Prison sentences for ganja possesion

Devorn Jacobs will have to spend the New Year behind bars as he was sentenced to one year in prison for marijuana possession.{{more}}

Magistrate Zoila Ellis Browne sentenced the twenty-four year old when he appeared at the Serious Offences Court on Monday, December 28, 2009.

Jacobs was among the large number of men who were either sentenced to jail or fined for the possession of marijuana at court on Monday.

Jacobs was charged with the possession of 4067 grams of cannabis with the intent to supply. He pleaded guilty to the offence.

Facts read in court state that Rapid Response Unit officers on patrol at Bamboo Range saw Jacobs coming from the direction of the Soufriere trail with a bag in his hand. Seeing the officers, he threw the bag into a potato field. The bag was retrieved by police officers and opened in Jacob’s presence. Marijuana was found in taped packages in the bag. More was found in another bag that Jacobs had on him.

A twenty-year-old was also sentenced to three months in prison for having in his possession over 1000 grams of cannabis. Lenroy Prince was charged with the possession of 1619 grams of cannabis with the intent to supply. He pleaded guilty to the offence.

Prince, a resident of Lowmans Hill, was found by with the marijuana by Narcotics officers on patrol at Lowmans Hill on December 25, 2009.

Sylvester Lee, a forty-three-year-old resident of Arnos Vale, was sentenced to prison as a result of breaching his two-year bond. The bond was a condition of a previous charge. Lee was charged with the possession of 240 grams of cannabis with intent to supply. He pleaded guilty to the charge. He was fined $1500.(OS)
