Let us have Christmas all year round

Fri Dec 20, 2013

The Christmas season is here, and once again we are seeing an outpouring of generosity, goodwill and cheer.

From public institutions, to private corporations and individuals, everyone seems to be playing a part: concessions, discounts, give-aways, events for the poor and disadvantaged, care packages and gift baskets.{{more}} Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see some of these gestures extended after the season has passed?

From time immemorial, we have had poor and disadvantaged with us, they are in need of care and care packages all year round. Let us show that we are not about being generous only because it is expected of us at this time, when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

On the personal side, we smile and greet others, exchanging sentiments of “Merry Christmas” and “Seasons Greetings” to friends, relatives and even strangers, as we hum or sing our favourite carols, Christmas or parang songs. Why not continue to smile and greet others all year round? Share the love, joy and cheer, and encourage others, especially when things appear to be at their worst.

A recent SEARCHLIGHT vox pop revealed that most persons we interviewed look forward to spending time with family around this time, which can be a good thing. Let us use the holidays to draw closer to estranged family members, friends and neighbours. Let us put aside old grudges not only for the season, but for the upcoming year and beyond. Let us learn to forgive and move on. That is, after all, the reason for the season; not just to celebrate just Christ’s birth, but to live a Christ-like lifestyle, which is based on love, patience and forgiveness; the acts he displayed through his death on the cross for our sins.

On behalf of the management and staff of Interactive Media Ltd and the SEARCHLIGHT newspapers, have a very happy, blessed and peaceful Christmas.
