When the votes are counted, shoppers move fast: Don’t fall behind
ELECTIONS ARE at the forefront of everyone’s mind.
The talk shows, the conversations in the minivan, the rallies. Particularly this week, it feels like nothing else exists and as a result many businesses convince themselves that they need to pause and wait until ‘things settle’ before they step into their Christmas marketing. That is a mistake.
People do not sit quietly for days after an election. They may take some time to discuss and discuss the outcome but real life kicks in. They begin turning their attention elsewhere and Christmas is at the top of that list. People go from watching the numbers roll in to thinking about their homes, their children, their travel plans, their grocery lists and everything else they need to handle for the season. Their spending mindsets shift immediately.
This is why businesses who wait until ‘after election hype dies down’ may lose momentum. They believe they are being smart by letting the noise pass. What actually happens is that they get left behind. While they are waiting for calm, consumers have already begun searching, comparing, window shopping and deciding who they will buy from.
Christmas does not slow down. It comes exactly when it comes and consumers prepare for it whether a campaign just finished or not. So the question becomes: if customers are already moving, why should your brand/business stay still?
Brands worry about posting during an election period because they assume nobody is paying attention. However, people may scroll for politics but their personal responsibilities never leave their minds. They are still thinking about the things they need for their homes. They are still planning gifts. They are still looking for solutions. They will still notice a relevant, well-timed message. That is the key: relevance and timing.
Your Christmas marketing is not competing with election talk. It is speaking to a different part of people’s lives and once election day passes, that part becomes the priority again. Life continues, bills continue, plans continue and December does not give anyone a slow start. The brands that benefit most are the ones that stay present. Not loud. Not political. Just steady, clear and helpful.
They communicate their offers. They show the value.
They stay visible. They prepare their audiences before the first week of December rushes in.
When a business waits too long, it doesn’t enter a calm market. It enters a crowded one. Everyone launches at the same time. Everyone fights for attention. Everyone tries to play catch up with shoppers who have already made decisions.
The post-election pivot is not about reacting fast. It is about recognizing reality. People do not pause their lives.
They shift their focus and the brands that meet them at that moment are the ones that win the season.
