Why we click on certain adverts but ignore others
Every day we scroll past hundreds of adverts without a second thought. Yet every now and then one stops us in our tracks. Why is that? It comes down to how our minds react to certain triggers and how well an advert connects us in the moment. Did you know, according to research, our attention span is now down to about eight seconds? That’s all the time you have before someone scrolls away. Think about it, just a quick scroll through Facebook or YouTube and you are hit with ad after ad. With so much content competing for attention, people have naturally learnt to tune a lot of it out.
That’s where psychology comes in. By understanding how people think and what grabs their attention, you can cut through the noise. The right psychological triggers can make your ad stand out, connect faster, and stick longer in the minds of consumers.
Clicks are not random. Your ads should hit the sweet spot between attention, relevance, emotion and trust. People ignore ads that lack those elements. The goal is not just to place more ads but to create the kind that feel meaningful and timely. When an ad feels like it belongs in someone’s life, a click is the natural next step.
Here are a few things to remember:
Attention comes first – An ad only works if it captures attention. Colours, bold images, or a headline that feels like it is speaking directly to your customers can cut through the noise.
However, attention alone is not enough. Once an ad has your eye, it needs to give you a reason to care.
Relevance is everything
– People click on ads that feel like they were made for them. If the message speaks to a current need, it feels less like an interruption and more like an opportunity.
An ad for a new productivity tool will appeal to a student during exam season, while a busy manager might be drawn to the promise of saving time. When the content fits the context, clicks happen.
Emotion creates connection
– We rarely act solely on logic. Ads that make us smile, laugh, or even feel a little inspired have a stronger pull. Emotion adds weight to a decision. Curiosity plays its part as well. A headline that teases an answer, or an image that hints at a bigger story can pull someone in.
Trust makes it safe to click
– If an advert feels sketchy, people will think twice. Clear branding, professional design, and social proof such as testimonials or reviews make people feel secure. The more trustworthy the ad feels, the more likely it is to get results.
Why people ignore ads
– On the flip side, ads fail when they feel irrelevant, cluttered or overwhelming. Too much text or
too many calls to action confuse the viewer. Repetition also leads to ad fatigue. When people see the same message too often, they stop noticing it altogether. Furthermore, poor timing can ruin even the best creative. The right person at the wrong moment simply will not engage.
