Empower your employees, enhance your brand through Public Relations (PR)

Empower your employees, enhance your brand through Public Relations (PR)

When you think about Public Relations (PR), what comes to mind? The aim of PR is not to sell but to build and protect the reputation of a brand, earn support and influence opinions and behaviour. It is very different to advertising and marketing. There is external PR which focuses on appealing to external customers, whilst internal PR focuses on people within the organization.

Internal PR isn’t just about managing how your company communicates with employees – it’s about building a culture of engagement and advocacy that will naturally extend to your customers, suppliers or vendors. When employees feel informed, valued, and empowered, they become some of your most effective advocates. By fostering strong internal communication, recognition, collaboration and culture, you create an environment where employees don’t just work for the company- they actively promote it.

The most successful businesses recognize that employees are not only the backbone of the business/brand but also some of the most powerful advocates and communicators. This is where internal public relations (PR) become a key strategy in fostering employee advocacy and engagement. By effectively utilizing internal PR, your brand can create a culture where employees feel empowered, connected, and invested in the brand’s mission, which in turn leads to stronger advocacy both within and outside the organization. Here are a few ways in which you can use internal PR to drive performance and outcomes.

Clear, consistent communication-
Effective internal communication starts with clarity. When employees understand the company’s mission, goals and values, they can more easily align themselves with the business’s objectives. A consistent communication strategy ensures everyone is on the same page.

Action item: Implement regular newsletters, intranet updates, or group meetings to keep employees informed and engaged. Be transparent about the company’s successes, challenges, and future plans. When employees feel informed, they’re more likely to advocate for the organization.

Recognize and celebrate employee contributions-
Employees want to feel valued. One of the simplest and most effective ways to boost employee morale is through recognition. Whether it’s celebrating a milestone, highlighting an individual’s achievements or acknowledging team successes, recognition makes employees feel appreciated and more likely to be engaged.

Action item: Start an ‘Employee of the Month’ programme or feature success stories in company communication. Recognition not only fosters pride in the workplace but also encourages employees to share these achievements with their networks, increasing employee advocacy (when the people who work for a company take steps to promote their employer).

Encourage open feedback and collaboration-
The best internal PR efforts foster a two-way conversation between leadership and employees. When employees are invited to share their ideas, concerns and feedback, they feel more involved in decision-making. This sense of inclusion leads to higher levels of engagement.

Action item: Use surveys, focus groups, or open-door policies to gather feedback from employees. Be sure to act on that feedback to show employees that their opinions are valued and make a difference. When employees feel heard, their advocacy grows naturally.

Create a sense of ownership and empowerment-
When employees feel that they have a stake in the company’s success, they are more likely to advocate for it. Internal PR strategies that emphasize ownership and empowerment can lead to higher engagement levels. Encouraging employees to take on leadership roles in projects or initiatives helps them feel responsible for the company’s success.

Action item: Empower employees to share their expertise by offering them opportunities to lead initiatives, mentor colleagues or contribute to decision-making. This gives them a sense of pride and responsibility, motivating them to advocate for the organization.

Share success stories and milestones-
Celebrating company wins doesn’t just involve leadership-it’s about involving the entire team in the celebration. When employees see that their contributions are part of the company’s success, they are more likely to speak highly of the business in both personal and professional settings.
Action item: Share stories of how employees have contributed to company achievements. Highlight both big wins and smaller victories. The more employees see themselves reflected in these successes, the more they will be motivated to advocate for the organization.

Create a strong company culture-
The foundation of employee advocacy and engagement is a company culture that values respect, trust and collaboration. A positive culture builds loyalty and pride, leading employees to naturally promote the company to others.

Action item: Make sure your company values are consistently communicated and lived by all levels of the organization. Encourage social interactions, team-building activities and support for personal and professional growth. A strong culture of inclusion and respect fosters employee loyalty and advocacy.

Leverage internal ambassadors for external PR-
Your most passionate and engaged employees can become powerful advocates outside the company. They already know the ins and outs of the organization and can speak to its values and mission with authenticity.

Action item: Encourage employees to share their experiences on social media or write blog posts about their work and achievements. Provide them with tools and guidelines to ensure they represent the company’s message in a positive and consistent way.
